Primary Research

I took some pictures in the evening of how lighting effected different locations. In my story the location is set in a city at night but I also thought about having it in the evening so I could get some nice sunset lighting.

Fish Primary Research

I went to a pet store and took these so I could study the movement and style of the fish, I can now reference it in my animations and design.

Fish Designs

I'm thinking of having the fish in 2D. I want the nightmare fish to be dark colours, greens and blues and the dream fish to be light colours gold and yellow. I also thought about having the fish contrasting colours so yellow and purple or orange and blue.

Updated Character

These are the better character design sketches from my notebook, I did more but I find these ones the best.

I then did some rough character concept work in Photoshop using colour, as my character will be associated with dreams I liked the idea of having them coloured in a similar way to the dream fish.

I did some research into Shaman, native American and aboriginal art to look for symbols that would be drawn on my characters head.

It gave me some inspiration into this character and allowed me to better understand what type of character I wanted.

I liked the idea of having something relate to the fisherman but also the dreams which is why I quite like the spiritual guide symbol mixed with the many fish symbol.

Character Design

I like to think of my character as half shaman and half fisherman. A fishaman. When designing the character I will draw shaman characters and fisherman characters and take inspiration from both.

So far I like the idea of the fisherman's hat and shaman's tribal paint. As I design this character I am trying to think of practicality. As this character will have a fishing rod I thought about having a hook hanging around it's neck or even wearing it as an earring. This character also uses a fish bowl so I liked the idea of them carrying it around their shoulder in a net bag.

I started by creating simple thumbnails. I also did some rough sketching in my sketchbook. I'm not sure whether the character is female or male yet.

Concept art

I had gotten some inspiration from the boards and other sources and decided to create some basic concept art. I wanted to experiment with shots and colours.

 I also liked my new idea because I could experiment with many different lighting, actions, special effects and editing.

Rough storyboards

After looking at my research I knew the basic plot to my idea. I also had an idea of some of the shots and angles that I wanted to include in my story. I really enjoyed drawing this story as it had a lot of action and interesting movement.

Idea change

I wasn't very interested in my story, I found it quite bland. I looked back at some of my other ideas that I had written down and started to research more into it. I knew I wanted someone to hunt a physical representation of a nightmare. After brainstorming the idea I decided that I wanted someone to fish for them on a roof top, with that idea in mind I then could research on pinterest.

Story ideas.

Over the summer I thought of many ideas for a 3rd year film but I had problems figuring out the ending.
I thought of a small part of plot but couldn't find an ending.
I decided to create a rough storyboard for an idea I had about the seasons.

A bull represents winter and a bunny represents spring. They fight it out over different locations and as they do the environment changes from winter to spring. I researched into my idea and made a pinterest board.

The snow on houses melt, the leaves start to grow back on the trees and water begins to unfreeze.
